DEC Commissioner Fired

Yesterday, Pete Grannis, the commissioner of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation was fired for "poor performance and insubordination". The obvious cause of the firing was a DEC memo describing the consequences of proposed budget cuts by Governer Patterson.

The controversial memo had the folliwng to say about the state of the DEC:

"Many of our programs are hanging by a thread. The public would be shocked to learn how thin we are in many areas. DEC is in the weakest position that is has been in since it was created 40 years ago."

This probably isn't a good sign for people who enjoy the Adirondacks and other state parks. Some of the DEC's responsibilities include enforcing environmental law, overseeing state forest preserve and wildlife management areas and regulating hunting, fishing and trapping within the state.
